EV charger grants in 2026: who can still get money off?
If you are getting an electric car, you may have heard about government grants towards a home charger. The rules changed on 1 April 2026, so here is where things stand.
How much is the grant?
Since 1 April 2026, government EV chargepoint grants pay up to £500 per socket towards buying and installing a charger.
Who can claim
- people who rent their home and have private off-street parking
- people who own and live in a flat with private parking
- residential landlords
- businesses, through separate workplace schemes
Who cannot
Most homeowners with their own driveway are generally not eligible.
How the grant is claimed
The grant is claimed by an installer authorised by the government, not by you directly. Ask your installer whether they are authorised and whether you qualify before you book.
Before you book an installer
- Check your electrical supply and fuse board can take a charger. Many need a new dedicated circuit.
- Home chargers sold in Great Britain must be smart, so they can be scheduled to charge when electricity is cheaper.
- A new circuit is notifiable work under the building regulations, so make sure it is certified.
Grant rules change, so always check the latest guidance on GOV.UK.
